Why Plus Size Women Should Wear Prints

We’ve all heard bad fashion advice that boils down to trying to make ourselves look smaller. Don’t wear bright colors, don’t wear stripes. Don’t wear anything FUN. We’re not on board with that. Why would you ever want to fade into the background? Make an entrance. Draw attention to yourself. The old saw that basic black can make you look thinner is a big honking lie. Black is chic and versatile, so it deserves room in everyone’s closet. But it doesn’t create an optical illusion that will have your friends suspecting you’ve gone down a size. You know what will get your friends to run up to you, declaring how fabulous you look? A bold print. If you’re used to solids and nothing but, you may feel a little trepidation at the thought of walking into a party wearing a print. You’re worried about people looking at you. That’s OK. We’re all a little shy sometimes. But remember that they’re looking at you because they’re noticing how great you look. No one is going to point and laugh at you. If they do, then you need to get yourself to a better party toot sweet. Dipping your toe into wearing prints may be scary. There are some unfortunate prints in the world. If you don’t feel confident in your own taste, then trust Yona’s taste. Love by Yona has two dresses available in a variety of prints and they’re all winners.

Myrda J Goes to Work :Side Gathered Petite Plus Size Dress

There’s so much more to Myrda J than clothes that are just right for hitting the dance floor. She also makes office-friendly day dresses for plus petites. And if there’s anywhere you want to have clothes that fit you perfectly, it’s at work. You look so much more polished and professional when you wear clothes cut for your plus petite frame. Sure, you can take your clothes to the tailor to be shortened (if you can find the time). But other proportions may still be off. The neckline might be too deep, or the waistline could hit you in the wrong spot. When you need to look put together, it’s worth it to stick with plus petite clothes. Myrda J’s Side Gathered Petite Plus Size Dress is work-friendly but has a bit more style than your average officewear. The 3/4 length sleeves stay out of your way. The draped neckline gives you office-appropriate coverage. The dark grey color and knee-length hem are all business. The side gathers do so much more than simply add a fashionable flourish. The gathers pull the dress in at the narrowest part of your body – right under the bust. This sort-of-but-not-quite empire waistline flatters all body shapes because it fits closely where you’re smallest and more loosely where you’re curvy. The flowing top layer skims over your middle, giving you plenty of room for your tummy and hips. That means you can breathe and move and stop worrying about how your clothes are pulling and binding. Because who has time to think about that at work? This dress is chic enough for after hours cocktail parties, or dinners out with important clients. Yet it’s comfortable enough that you’ll want to wear it on same old, same old days too.

Why We Love Wrap Dresses: It Fits! It Fits!

Whimsy Wrap Dress

The wrap dress was an instant classic when it was invented in 1974. Considering how unfortunate most 70s fashion was, this is nothing short of miraculous. Nowadays, every closet has a wrap dress. Or two or three. Faux wrap, true wrap. We love them all. What is it about this style that’s so irresistible? The adjustable fit is a big part of the wrap dress’ appeal. You usually have to make a trip to the tailor to get an off the rack dress that fits you perfectly. But with a wrap dress, you just need to tie it just so. Generous bust? Wrap the dress so you get all the coverage you need. Pear shaped? Other dresses may not fit your chest and hips equally well. But you can get a wrap dress that fits your bottom half and then tie the top snugly – instant alterations. Even a faux wrap like the Kiyonna Whimsy Wrap Dress (pictured, left) can be adjusted a little. If you want a higher neckline, you can add a camisole underneath, or pin the criss cross neckline together with a brooch.

Feminine Frills Lace Top

Kiyonna’s Feminine Frills Lace Top actually is two separate layers. The top layer is a flirty mix of two laces with a flattering flare at the hips. The bottom layer is a matching tank top. Wear the lace layer over a contrasting tank for a different look.

The shape of this top is especially flattering to pear shaped women, but it looks good on any body shape.

Why You Should Invest in a Good Camisole

Cushie b CamisoleIt’s time to stop treating your camisoles as an afterthought. Sure, they’re mostly covered up by other clothes, but they can tie an outfit together as well as the perfect cardigan. There are a lot of differences between Cushie b’s Black Pointelle Knit Camisole and some flimsy cami from the mall. And they’re important differences.

Lifespan

If you want to make an inexpensive camisole, you start with cheap fabric. It’s going to be thin, with no drape. And it’s going to fall apart in the wash in a few months. Either the material will wear out, or the seams will give out thanks to flimsy stitching. If you’re lucky, it’ll hold together but will bag and pill so you have one more thing to wear while doing yardwork.

But a luxury camisole is made with high quality knit fabric. The material will be heavy and thick – but not bulky. The extra weight means the fabric drapes over your body instead of clinging. The rayon/nylon pointelle knit Cushie b uses will last for years. The seams are sewn with a long lasting stitch.

Cost Per Wear

Why not buy a new, cheap cami every month or two? It ends up costing more in the long run. It all comes down to Cost Per Wear. If you buy a cami for $10 and you can wear it to work once a week for 8 weeks, you’re paying $1.25 for each wear you get out of it. But a $75 camisole will last for years. Let’s say you wear it once a week for two years (though it may last longer). That makes the Cost Per Wear 72 cents.

That means if you buy the cheap camisole, you’re spending $130 (one $10 cami every 8 week for 104 weeks) instead of $75 for one cami. The luxury option is actually more budget-friendly.

Opacity

Any garment’s first job is to cover your body. Since inexpensive camisoles are made from thin, flimsy fabric, they tend to be see-through. No big deal, right? You’re covering most of the cami with something else.

Until you need to take off your top layer for some reason. Airport security, broken air conditioner, stuffy conference room – those top layers could come off at any time. That’s the whole point in wearing layers – so you can easily wear more or less with minimal fuss.

When that happens, do you want to be wearing a camisole that reveals more than you’d like? Or would you prefer a camisole that’s so thick and well made that you can wear it solo without embarrassment?

You’re Worth It

Too often, women put ourselves last when it comes to the family clothing budget. Then we end up wasting money on fast fashion that lets us down. If you’re going to be wearing something every week, you shouldn’t skimp on it. You deserve to look and feel your best all the way down to your skin.
